As Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Green Hydrogen
Mission accelerates India’s transition towards green manufacturing and a
low-carbon economy, TOTO has become the world’s first sanitaryware manufacturer
to conduct commercial production using green hydrogen in the firing process.
The achievement has been recognised by Euromonitor International.
The milestone was achieved at TOTO Kokura, the company’s No.
1 plant in Japan, where continuous advancements in firing technology and the
use of cleaner fuels have helped reduce CO2 emissions from sanitaryware
manufacturing. The shift from coal-fired kilns to the latest fibre ion furnace
has contributed to an approximately 40 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions
since 2022. The transition to hydrogen is expected to enable further reductions
as TOTO works towards carbon neutrality by 2050.
The progress reflects TOTO’s continued focus on improving
firing technology and converting to cleaner fuels as part of its journey
towards carbon neutrality. Using hydrogen in the firing process represents a
further step in reducing emissions from sanitaryware manufacturing while
maintaining established product quality standards.
Shiozawa Kazuyuki, Managing Director, TOTO India, said,
“Sustainability has always been central to TOTO’s global philosophy. This
milestone reflects our commitment to advancing cleaner manufacturing through
continuous innovation. As India places greater emphasis on sustainable
construction and low-carbon development, we remain committed to bringing
globally proven technologies and responsible manufacturing expertise that create
long-term value for customers and the environment.”
The green hydrogen milestone builds on TOTO’s broader
sustainability journey, including decades of investment in cleaner
manufacturing technologies, water-efficient innovations and environmentally responsible
product development. It further strengthens the company’s commitment to a more
sustainable future while delivering bathroom solutions for the Indian market.
TOTO has become the world’s first sanitaryware manufacturer to use green hydrogen in commercial production, following a 40 per cent reduction in CO? emissions since 2022.
