Energy in Motion Ltd (EIM) has inaugurated its Electric
Heavy-Duty Commercial Vehicle Complex in Ambi village, Talegaon, Pune, marking
a milestone in India’s electric mobility landscape. The integrated complex
brings together an electric heavy commercial vehicle assembly facility, a
lithium-ion battery pack assembly factory and an independent battery testing
laboratory.
The facility was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Sharadchandra Pawar, Member of Parliament
(Rajya Sabha), and Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
The Industry 4.0-enabled complex was developed in just over
a year after the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU). It has an
initial capacity of 5,000 vehicles per shift per year and marks the first phase
of EIM’s ?10 billion investment in Maharashtra.
The facility is expected to create more than 2,000 direct
and indirect jobs, as well as work opportunities in design, research and
development, and IT. It brings commercial vehicle assembly, lithium-ion heavy
battery pack assembly and an independent battery testing laboratory together
within a single complex, strengthening EIM’s capabilities across the value
chain.
Alongside manufacturing heavy electric vehicles, EIM is
building a nationwide network of battery swapping and charging infrastructure
along major highways, at ports and in industrial complexes. These
megawatt-scale hubs can swap batteries in EIM vehicles and other compatible
makes in less than seven minutes. They can also fast-charge vehicles equipped
with a DC fast-charging socket conforming to the BIS standard (CCS-2).
EIM’s technology partnerships include BAIC Foton Motor for
electric heavy vehicles. Foton Motor is one of the largest commercial vehicle
companies, with sales exceeding 650,000 units last year. Contemporary Amperex
Technology Co. Ltd (CATL), the world’s largest battery manufacturer, has a 39
per cent share of the global market. EIM has also partnered with Shanghai
Enneagon Energy Technology Co. Ltd for robotic battery swapping systems; the
company has built more than 1,600 stations worldwide.
These collaborations enable EIM to combine global technology
expertise with localised, India-focused manufacturing and infrastructure
development.
With the Talegaon complex now open, EIM says it is
strengthening its position in India’s commercial electric vehicle transition
and contributing to a cleaner, more efficient future for commercial transport.
Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director, EIM, said: “We are
delighted to launch this integrated manufacturing and testing complex in Pune,
where we will build some of the largest electric vehicles to ply on India’s
roads. This facility was built in record time with facilitation from the
Maharashtra Government, full support from our technology partners, speedy
execution by our hosts RMK Spaces and the round-the-clock efforts of EIM’s
team, led by our Manufacturing Head, Mahesh Keskar.
“We now focus on building a nationwide network of megawatt-scale charging and battery swapping stations to enable India’s speedy transition from diesel to electric heavy goods transportation.”
