Cherian takes us through the evolution of Indian manufacturing sector and how his company is supporting the sector’s efforts to adopt modern production technology.

The liberalisation of Indian economy has opened new windows of opportunity for manufacturers. Increasingly the success of manufacturing industries is dependent on innovations, R&D. Central to maintaining competitiveness is the ability of producers to respond quickly and effectively to the changing demands of the international market, says Sam Cherian, co-founder, Elmeasure India Private Ltd, who believes that the advent of industry 4.0 has lead Indian manufacturing industries to undergo a revolutionary transformation in their method of operation. Here, Cherian takes us through the evolution of Indian manufacturing sector and how his company is supporting the sector’s efforts to adopt modern production technology.

Kindly brief us about Elmeasure and products & services offered by it.
Elmeasure is the pioneer in energy management and is one of the largest panel meter manufacturer in the country. Our product range includes EMS (Energy Management System) with complete automation and control features, multifunction meters, digital panel meters and control, monitoring and networking products such as prepaid energy meter, power factor controllers, motor protection systems, earth leakage relay, Automatic Changeover with Current Limiter (ACCL), Automatic Transfer Switches (ATeS), gateway, converter etc. Most of our products can accept digital inputs, 4 digital outputs with full flexibility for controlling and cost-effective networking. We have recently launched meters like Sleek Multifunction Meter, Genius Pro, Navigator Pro and power quality analyser. These products have been well received by our customers.

What are the factors driving the demand for your products & services? Which are the major end-user industries for your products & services?
Elmeasure provides products that can accept digital and analog inputs or outputs with full flexibility in integrating process parameters. Elmeasure endeavours to meet the standards of the industrial revolution, and presently blends with the latest technology to schedule preventive maintenance, reduce the downtime, effective utilization of resources for varied sectors. The common goal and vision of Elmeasure have always been to serve the society and to create a positive impact on the environment, consumers, employees and the public through our activities.

Our Products and solutions are applicable to any customer that consumes power such as the textile/spinning mills, commercial/housing complexes, airports/aeronautics, financial institution, paper, automobile, food, beverage & distillery, pharmaceutical, cement/building material, glass, power generation, chemicals, hospitals, steel/foundry, information technology, telecom, educational institution, OEM, engineering, oil refinery and several other industries.

How is your company helping manufacturers in their journey towards Industry 4.0?
Elmeasure have partnered to bring the Internet of Things-enabled energy management solutions (EMS) in the industrial IoT space. The principal hurdle encountered by us was to make the industries understand the concept and the benefits that can be obtained. Accordingly, Elmeasure conducts training programmes periodically to provide the first-hand experience of implementing these technologies, where the customers can view the efficiency, quality, time, and cost difference in adopting these systems. Moreover, network interfaces or Ethernet connections are found to be absent in the traditional equipment that is considered as the fortitude of an organization. These equipment require additional hardware to act as web servers in transmitting data to the network via wireless or Ethernet connections. Consequently, Elmeasure provides full flexibility in integrating process parameters. Elmeasure leverage IoT technology to gather, process, visualise, and draw insights from energy data at scale, across its broad array of energy product portfolio to provide unified energy management solutions. Elmeasure provides innovative and specialised EMS for various industry verticals such as textile, pharmaceutical, automobile, commercial and residential buildings.

What are your growth plans for the company?
Elmeasure India Pvt Ltd is renowned for its technical know-how in the field of energy management. It is backed by a pool of committed and talented experts to invent, customise & serve the needs of over 45 industries with million products over the globe.
Elmeasure has consistently grown 30 to 40 per cent every year. We are already on mark to reach our sales target of over Rs 85 crores for the current financial year. Over the next 18 months, Elmeasure seeks to achieve a turnover of Rs 100 crores plus by broadening our product base, providing solution based engineering, and acquisitions.

How do you view the present status of India’s manufacturing sector? Are government initiatives like Make in India giving a boost to the sector?
The advent of industry 4.0 has lead Indian manufacturing industries to undergo a revolutionary transformation in their method of operation. Make in India, Smart Cities Mission and Digital India have been initiated by the Government of India to upgrade the manufacturing sectors.  Thanks to the Government’s ‘Make in India’ program that has seen a good response from the Industry worldwide. With the help of Make in India drive, India is on the path of becoming the hub for hi-tech manufacturing as many global giants have either set up or are in process of setting up manufacturing plants in India, attracted by India's market of more than a billion consumers and increasing purchasing power.
However, the major challenges encountered by the Indian industries are associated with infrastructure, data security and privacy, standards-based interoperability, insufficient support to MSMEs. Consequently, collaborative efforts are required from industries, government and research institutions to help India achieve digital revolution.

What does India offer to global manufacturing companies?
India has several resources such as growing market, a great workforce with diverse skills, demographic dividend, research and development centres, technology start-up base and government focus to proactively achieve digital revolution. In India, few industries have begun to explore smart factory applications, by accessing IoT, cloud, artificial intelligence and advanced analytics. The continuous demand for faster, cheaper, and better quality products by the customers manifest the need to embrace change and technology in manufacturing sectors.

Automation is growing across the world. How are Indian manufacturers taking advantage of automation to improve their competitiveness?
The liberalisation of the economy has opened new windows of opportunity for the manufacturing sector. Increasingly the success of manufacturing industries is dependent on innovations, research and development. It is critical not only to remain competitive but also, gain advantages by developing and commercialising new technologies. Technology development is critical to a country's efforts in improving productivity, efficiency and competitiveness of its industrial sector.

Central to maintaining competitiveness is the ability of producers to respond quickly and effectively to the changing demands of the international market. As the recent technological trends are changing, it's slowly switching IT dependability towards automation. Trends are taking gear within the Indian manufacturing sector to embrace technological advances in manufacturing such as Automation, IoT, Robotics, 3D printing etc. Today Indian manufacturers are more forthcoming to invest in new technologies to improve plant productivity, compete against rivals, and maintain an edge with customers. Adopting new technology in the manufacturing process has helped Elmeasure to increase our productivity to 50K products/month with superior quality.
