USGBC certifies Godrej Bhavan as high-performance Green Building

Godrej_Bhavan_caption.jpgThe U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has certified a corporate office building, 'Godrej Bhavan' in Mumbai, as a high-performance green building that maximizes operational efficiencies while minimizing environmental impact.

The upgraded facility, which is owned by Godrej, one of India's largest industrial conglomerates, now offers a significantly reduced environmental impact as well as lower energy and operating costs.

The project, which costs approximately USD $125,000, has resulted in a 15 per cent reduction in annual energy costs, representing a simple payback of less than four years. The corporate office which building was built in 1972 is 46,502.51 sq.ft and has approximately 102 employees working in the facility. On 15th February, 2011, Godrej Bhavan received Gold certification from USGBC in the existing building (EB) category, version 2.

To mark this achievement, Venkatesh Valluri, chairman and president, Ingersoll Rand India, and Rajesh Sikka, business leader, Trane India, presented an "Energy Efficiency Leader Award" to Godrej executives.

As part of a carefully managed project, Godrej executed a number of infrastructure improvements which are expected to reduce energy costs, improve cash flow and increase employee satisfaction. This 'triple bottom line' approach that demonstrates improvements to business, people and the environment are part of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building philosophy.

"We believe it is important to create a LEED-certified workspace because it benefits the environment and the bottom line," said H N Daruwalla, vice president and business head, Godrej Electricals & Electronics. "Most importantly, it's good for our employees and the community at large."

Going green can pay big dividends for commercial building property managers and owners. According to a recent McGraw-Hill Construction Report, firms that execute environmentally responsible projects in their own facilities or who serve this market can expect to reap significant business advantages. Green building can lead to healthier places to live and work, reduce energy and water use, and generate better profitability.

To achieve LEED certification, Godrej Bhavan leaders met strict requirements regarding sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation in design.
