It was a momentous occasion when Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel inaugurated Hannover Messe 2015 on the evening of April 12, 2015 at the Hannover Congress Centrum in the heart of the trade fair complex.

"Whatever we choose to do, from reaching the cutting edge of industry to meeting the most critical social need, we require investment and technology, industry and enterprise. That is why for me, Make in India is not a brand. Nor is it simply a slogan on a smart lion! It is a new national movement. And, it covers the whole spectrum of our government, society and business," said Modi, in what could be described as the most significant international statement the Make in India program has made to date. Over 300 top global leaders in business, technology, industrial scientists and policy makers listened to the Indian Prime Minister's inspiring address at the gala opening ceremony of Hannover Messe, the world's largest industrial fair, in the capacity audience of 3000. Many exhibitors, visitors and dignitaries were left disappointed, as there was simply no room to accommodate all.

Outlining his governments' resolve to accelerate economic growth and create jobs for our youth; to build world class industry and infrastructure; to transform cities and villages; clean up the environment; and improve quality of life, the prime Minister stated that "We will naturally pursue our goals on the strength of our own resources, skills and enterprise. But, we know that we will be more successful when we do this in partnership with the world. For people in India, Germany is a valued partner; and, an enduring symbol of technology and innovation, quality and productivity."

Drawing the attention towards India's tremendous demographic dividend, he attributed the renewed interest worldwide in building partnerships of trade, investment and innovation in India to its vast pool of young empowered citizens with unstoppable entrepreneurial energy. The Prime Minister added that "It mirrors the surge of hope in our own people and industry; the new tide of expectation in our 800 million youth - for opportunities and progress. And, if we want to fulfil the dreams of our youth, we must turn our industry into a manufacturing hub for the world and an engine for employment at home." With the world's fastest-growing working-age population, India is set to be the world's talent base.

Echoing the mood and the sentiment, German Chancellor Angela Merkel in turn said in her address "This year, the focus is on one country in particular. India is the partner country of Hannover Messe for the second time since 2006. And we have already been able to experience that India is presenting itself with new strength."

India's participation at Hannover Messe is not only aimed to pave the path for transformation of the world's largest democracy into the world's most powerful economy but also to present a unique perspective of India as a vibrant, dynamic modern India with its traditional culture and roots intact. Official partner country India wove its heritage, cultural diversity, and accomplishments in technology and enterprise into an immersive multimedia performance. Yoga demonstrations were blended with classical and folk dances and 3D video mapping through a vivid synergy of modern technology and traditional choreography. The cultural extravaganza was followed by the guests having a taste of India's varied culinary experience wherein they were introduced to delicacies specially prepared by the top chefs from India.

Evoking India's great poet and philosopher, Rabindranath Tagore's famous lines, the Prime Minister said that Germany has done more than any other country to open India to the Western World. India and Germany can collaborate and gain from each other's experience and expertise in leading-edge technology and services. Engineering, environmental technologies, infrastructure, electronics, renewable energy, water and food processing are some of the sectors that hold tremendous promise of cooperation. "For people in India, Germany is a valued partner; and, an enduring symbol of technology and innovation, quality and productivity," said the PM. German Chancellor Merkel also stated in her encouraging remark that, "The trade volume with India is a good foundation to further develop our economic contacts. It amounts to 16 billion euros, making Germany India's most important trade partner in the European Union. Of course, we want to remain in this position."

There were many positive developments for corporate India during the event in terms of signing of deals for which no doubt background work was prepared much earlier, though the actual deals were probably signed during this even. The Essel Group, one of India's largest business conglomerates and a front-runner in developing the Smart City Framework for India, announced entering into technology transfer pacts with three leading German firms at Hannover. Group Chairman Dr Subhash Chandra moderated a panel discussion on the smart cities during the event, Secretary of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Amitabh Kant unveiled the Essel smart city frame work. Mr Ashok Agarwal, CEO, Essel Infraprojects, said, "We are glad to announce our alliance with Schneider, FeConGmBH and Passavant Energy and Environment GmbH. We believe that this will put us on the fast track in delivering on our commitment to produce 12500 MW of solar energy and 4000 MW of wind energy in India in the coming year as also in establishing Essel as a major player in the 7.5 billion Euros market for waste water management in India."

The information design of India's pavilion at Hall 6 of Hannover Messe depicted the economic potential of the country's most fertile sectors including IT & BPM, industrial corridors and smart cities and the demographic dividends it hopes to reap. A prominent section had been dedicated to Indo-German alliances, potential avenues for partnership, and initiatives to harmonize the interests of both nations. Major national programs such as Skill India and Digital India were also represented. The India pavilion charted India's economic road map for the next decade.

The Indo-German Business Summit on April 13, 2015 was conceptualised as a discussion forum for CEOs from both nations. Both Mr Modi and Dr Merkel addressed this summit, which was attended by top Indian and German industry leaders such as Cyrus Mistry, Chairman Tata Sons, Baba Kalyani, CMD, Bharat Forge Ltd and Joe Kaeser, President Siemens. These business leaders further explored possibilities of India's economic interactions with Germany's industrial prowess, while posting strong reasons to invest in India.
