IEEMA: Electrifying the Nation

IEEMA members represent annual turnover in excess of USD 22 billion and have contributed to more than 90% of power equipment installed in India.

Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA) is the apex industry association of manufacturers of electrical, industrial electronics and allied equipment in India. Encompassing the complete value chain in power generation, transmission and distribution equipment, the association member companies represent a combined annual turnover in excess of USD 22 billion and have contributed to more than 90% of power equipment installed in India.

Founded in 1948 soon after the country became independent, IEEMA actually started as IEMA – Indian Electrical Manufacturers’ Association, as electronics at that point of time had not attained the status it enjoys today, when eight Indian companies came together in Mumbai (then Bombay) and decided to create a platform for promotion of the industry. These were: Kirloskar Electric Co Ltd, India Electric Works Ltd, General Electric Co (India) Ltd, Kaycee Industries Ltd, National Insulated Cable Co of India Ltd, Associated Electrical Industries Mfg Co Ltd, Crompton Parkinson Works Ltd and Electric Construction & Equipment Co Ltd. Mr N W Gurjar of Kirloskar Electric Co Ltd was the first President of the organisation.

In those years, universally, electronics had not attained the status it enjoys today and was mainly restricted to audio, broadcasting, and telephonic and telegraphic communication. Telephones were still considered a luxury, affordable by elite class only. Others areas of electronics were defence oriented. Development of civilian industries in this sector was restricted and until 1984, almost all activities in electronics sector except entertainment electronics were reserved for the public sector companies like Bharat Electronics Ltd and Central Electronics Ltd. By mid-1980s, many members of IEEMA had already entered the electronics field in a limited way for automation and controls, industrial electronics and instrumentation. These members were, therefore, well equipped to take advantage of liberalisation and were among the first to expand their activities to encompass electronics sector also. But as the sector opened up for private enterprise, in 1986 IEMA became IEEMA and the electronics got its due representation in the association.

“Make in India” is perhaps one of the most important programmes being pursued by the Government of India. The central theme is about transforming India into a manufacturing hub with world class technology. IEEMA being one of the proud partners of the ‘Make in India’ campaign has been vigorously pursuing with the policy makers to promote made in India products with state-of-the-art technology.

-Mr Babu Babel,
President, IEEMA

For the first two decades after formation, the membership of association remained more or less stagnant and hence there was not much by way of expansion. But it continued to grow through the 1970s and 10 years later, was well on its way to become a powerful organisation commensurate with the status and stature of the electrical and electronics in the country. Today IEEMA represents over 800 companies, covering a wide range of electrical, professional electronics and allied products encompassing raw materials, parts, components, products, systems and services. It is recognised as the representative organisation of the Indian electrical and professional electronics industry, and therefore invited to represent the industry on many councils and committees constituted by the government.

IEEMA has a pan India presence with corporate office in New Delhi, registered office in Mumbai and regional offices in Kolkata and Bangalore. The association also has regional representatives in Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Guwahati, Raipur, Bhubaneshwar, Srinagar and Hyderabad, imparting it a truly national representative character.

The Indian electrical equipment industry size in 2013-14 was in excess of USD 22 billion with exports of USD 5 billion. The industry provides direct and indirect employment to over 1.5 million persons, and to over 5 million across the entire value chain. Mr Babu Babel is the current president of the association elected for the year 2015-16, and Sunil Misra the Director General.

IEEMA is the natural voice of Indian electrical industry and plays a crucial policy advocacy role with the government and its agencies. IEEMA facilitates a robust two-way flow of customised and value added information between the government and the industry. It sensitises all stakeholders on the future requirements for development of the power sector in the country. IEEMA also engages proactively in government-industry consultative mechanism through its representation on councils and committees constituted by the government and its agencies in policy, strategic and other matters.

ELECRAMA-2016, scheduled for February 13-17, 2016 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), is the 12th edition of the biggest showcase of the world of electricity. As the world’s third largest producer of power, India needs to connect the diverse generation and transmission forms, crisscrossing a variety of geographical and socio economic challenges, often bringing diverse solutions and technologies across the world of electricity into one homogenous answer to today’s challenges.

The Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), the organiser, has also lined up a series of events concurrent to the exhibition. These include:

* World Utility Summit™ – a pioneering thought leadership forum, that attempts to set the agenda for the future, actively playing the role of a key enabler for the eco-system, to develop optimal solutions, technology and products.

* International T&D Conclave – now in the third edition, this is a platform for business partnership between the T&D industry and its stakeholders across the value chain.

* Network 2 Networth, scheduled for 15th February, is an exclusive interaction platform for finance fraternity to interface with industry to explore investment opportunities in the electrical industry.

* CEO Summit – this is an exclusive event, by invitation only, scheduled for 13th February. This is a business leader’s summit which brings together the captains of the Indian electrical industry to discuss and deliberate on challenges in the power sector and the direction to shape the contours of the future power networks.

* Reverse Buyer Seller Meet – scheduled for February 14-16, this offers unparalleled market access opportunities for small and medium manufacturers who are seeking to reach out to buyers in key markets. This is an initiative supported by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Department of Commerce, Government of India.

* CIGRE Tutorials – 15-16th February – Technically inclined participants can enrich themselves with plethora of seminars and conferences, notable of them being the tutorials organised with the support of CIGRE – the Council on large electric systems, an international non-profit association.

IEEMA provides a vibrant platform for knowledge sharing, adoption of best practices and networking opportunities for manufacturers, utilities, professionals, international experts and organisations. It organises technical product-specific international seminars, national conferences and workshops. IEEMA works closely with government agencies, utilities, standardisation bodies, research & development organisations and testing institutes for formulating Indian standards for electro-technical industry and developing energy efficient products.

Based on detailed information gathered from members, IEEMA has been compiling and disseminating detailed statistics of production data for more than three decades which is used extensively by industry and others. IEEMA also evolves and operates equitable and uniform Price Variation Clause (PVC) by circulating applicable monthly raw material prices and indices. Due to its unbiased and systematic approach, IEEMA PVCs have gained recognition and credibility over the last three decades and are a crucial part of almost all tenders of utilities, public sector enterprises and major private players, including projects funded by multilateral development agencies.

IEEMA produces well researched publications and reports, including the IEEMA Journal – the leading electrical and electronics monthly in the country, also the only ABC certified journal in its league. The association holds product specific conferences and seminars across switchgear, transformers, conductors, etc., and large exhibitions, such as, ELECRAMA (see box) which is the world’s largest forum for the electrical transmission and distribution equipment industry.

IEEMA endeavours to remain in the forefront of connectivity with policy makers and sensitising its members to issues facing the power equipment industry, and aligning with the new paradigm shift that is occurring in the power sector, not just in India, but also in the rest of the world.

The IEEMA vision – Electricity for All and Global Excellence leading to Human Enrichment and the Made In India brand promise is what keeps the association members truly integrated and aligned to nation building.
