HP & INDO-MIM spearhead metal 3DP for automotive applications in India
Industry News- May 09,24
As India is a highly cost-sensitive market, manufacturers may use 3DP for high-quality personalisation parts for vehicle interiors and detailed EV components.
A plethora of available vehicles across all segments clearly indicates that India’s manufacturing sector is advancing rapidly. The new and efficient technology acting as leverage, the sector is also witnessing a revolutionary shift with the adoption of 3D printing technologies that promise to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and innovate at a fast pace. The collaboration between HP Inc. and INDO-MIM, the world’s leading metal injection molding (MIM) company based in India, is another significant advantage for the industry. The installation of HP’s advanced Metal Jet S100 printers at INDO-MIM’s Bengaluru facility marks a significant step towards modernising manufacturing processes not just in India but on a global scale.
Strategic Collaboration
The synergy between HP and INDO-MIM leverages cutting-edge 3D metal printing technology to produce high-precision metal parts, predominantly for the automotive sector but also touching aerospace, defence, consumer electronics, and medical equipment industries.
Savi Baveja, President, HP Personalisation & 3D Printing, expresses pride in this partnership, “It has potential to transform the production landscape in India by boosting local manufacturing capabilities and fostering global export opportunities.”
Krishna Chivukula Jr, CEO, INDO-MIM, “This collaboration is viewed as a milestone that equips the company with the necessary tools to meet escalating customer demands with unprecedented precision and efficiency. Adopting HP’s Metal Jet S100 printers is not just about enhancing capacity but is also a strategic move to explore new materials and applications, particularly for the automotive industry.”
Fast-Tracking Automotive Manufacturing
The automotive sector in India stands to gain significantly from this technology infusion. The ability to produce complex parts quickly and efficiently without the need for traditional tooling reduces lead times and costs while also allowing for greater design flexibility. This is particularly advantageous in a rapidly evolving sector like automotive manufacturing, where customisation and rapid prototyping are becoming increasingly important.
The localised production capabilities provided by INDO-MIM’s adoption of HP’s technology also mean that automotive manufacturers in India can reduce dependency on imports, which is crucial in a time of global supply chain uncertainties. It must be noted that the automotive market is still cost-sensitive, and Chivukula Jr. believes it will still take some time for Indian manufacturers to adapt to this cutting-edge tech.
Impact On The Global Manufacturing Arena
By establishing advanced manufacturing capabilities in India, HP and INDO-MIM are not just catering to the local or national market but are positioning themselves as pivotal players in the global market. The Metal Jet S100 solution introduced by HP in 2023 has set a new standard for the industry, enabling efficient design and production of metal parts at scale. This technology is not merely about maintaining the status quo but is geared towards transforming the entire manufacturing supply chain by reducing stages in the production line, which traditionally included numerous vendors and extensive lead times.
Sustainability Prospects
Both companies are committed to advancing technology and sustainable manufacturing practices. This approach is not only about business efficiency but also about ecological responsibility. Metal 3D printing offers significant reductions in waste compared to traditional manufacturing processes, which fits well with the global push towards reducing carbon footprints and enhancing sustainability in industrial production.
