IMTEX FORMING 2020: The future is here

With more than 500 exhibitors from over 22 countries showcasing their latest products and solutions, IMTEX FORMING 2020 will show the world the capabilities of India’s manufacturing industries.

The Government of India aims to make India a $5 trillion dollar economy by 2025 with manufacturing sector contributing around $ 1 trillion. With India fast emerging as a destination of choice for manufacturing, machine tools sector, which serves as the mother industry, is expected to play a big role.

As per the latest Gardner's world machine tool survey, India was ranked 7th in consumption and 9th in production globally (one notch up in both consumption and production compared to previous year). While Indian machine tools sector predominately supports and supplies to the automotive and auto component industry, sectors like electrical & electronics, aerospace & defence, capital goods, etc are likely to contribute significantly to the growth of machine tools sector in the coming years.

"Indian machine tool industry grew at 32 per cent in 2018-19. Machine tool production for 2018-19 is estimated to be around Rs 9,600 crores, and consumption was around Rs 21,000 crores. Indian machine tool industry moved up by one notch in both consumption and production in the global list of machine tool producing and consuming countries as against the previous year. As per the latest Gardner’s ‘World Machine Tool Survey’, India is ranked 7th in consumption and 9th in production, globally.
Moving forward, machine tool industry will be focusing more on non-auto sector, substituting imported products with indigenously built ones through innovation and R&D, and focus more on export-led growth,” stated the Indian Machine Tools Manufacturers’ Association (IMTMA).

IMTMA is the apex body and single point of contact for machine tool industry in India. IMTMA plays a crucial role in the growth and development of metalworking industry in the country. IMTMA’s initiatives range from policy advocacy, export promotion, trade fairs, mega events, training, seminars, technology missions, publications, etc. IMTMA formed in 1946 has a membership of over 450 members and represents 90 per cent of the organised machine tool and allied equipment manufacturers in the country.

Forming the future

Based on how the metal is shaped, the Indian machine tools industry can be classified into metal cutting and metal forming machines. Though metal forming accounts for only 20 per cent of the total metalworking demand in India, it plays an important role in the manufacturing industry.

"Metal forming constitutes around 20 per cent of total metalworking demand in India. Around 80 per cent of metal forming machines consumed in India are imported. Metal forming machinery in India is predominantly driven by automotive sector and its allied supportive industries besides sectors like aerospace, defence, consumer durables, furniture, etc. There is a perception among end-user segments that domestic machines are not at par with imported ones with respect to overall performance and total cost of ownership. Machine tool builders are striving to build machines matching the performance of global products and are cost-effective as well through innovation and R&D. This will help in substituting imports and avail export opportunities," said IMTMA official.

Some of the emerging trends in metal forming industry are:

  • Multi-tasking and multi technology machine building: Combination of laser, plasma and water-jet cutting with integrated sheet storage and sorting of processed components
  • Hybrids of laser cutting and CNC punching press
  • Use of additive manufacturing for die, mould, tools, tooling and fixtures
  • Metal forming industry is using composites for improved material properties and characteristics

According to IMTMA, "With industry using composites for material properties and characteristics have improved and manufacturers are able to meet the requirements of automotive sector as well as explore opportunities in emerging fields such as aerospace, defence, railways, ship-building, medical equipment, and so on."

Against this background, IMTMA will be hosting IMTEX FORMING 2020 & Tooltech 2020 at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Bengaluru, from January 23-28. IMTEX Forming 2020 will help narrow the technology gaps at a faster pace by offering a platform for connecting and collaborating with global manufacturers.

Knowledge sharing platform

More than 500 exhibitors from over 22 countries are expected to exhibit their latest products and solutions in the metal forming sector at IMTEX FORMING 2020 & Tooltech 2020. The focus will be on additive manufacturing and Industry 4.0. There will be an exclusive i2 Academia Pavilion. Over 40,000 business visitors are expected to visit the expo. The expo will also host Connect (an awareness programme on machine tool industry) and international buyer-seller meet.

The expo will once again bring diverse groups and stakeholders on a common platform for knowledge sharing and transacting business. Technologies in metal forming such as high speed laser cutting machine, sheet metal working, welding and joining, presses, metrology, and CAD/CAM essential for Indian manufacturing will be exhibited ‘live’ enabling business visitors to take informed decisions.

Expressing his thoughts on the upcoming show, Indradev Babu, who took over as IMTMA President from September 2019, said, “Technology enthusiasts will have a lot to unearth especially in additive manufacturing which is being showcased at IMTEX FORMING besides Industry 4.0 which is highly relevant for the manufacturing industry.”

Sharing his views on IMTEX FORMING, V Anbu, Director General & CEO, IMTMA, said, “It is incredibly inspiring to see the growth of a brand. IMTEX FORMING 2020, now counted as Asia’s leading exhibition, is highly relevant given the prevailing tough market conditions. The exhibition creates a welcoming environment for visitors. Industrialists feel privileged to conduct transactions at the show. IMTEX FORMING is an expression of showing the world the capabilities of India’s manufacturing industries.”

Companies will showcase technologies to suit user industry sectors such as aerospace, defence, railways, power, medical equipment, white and brown goods, oil and gas equipment, shipbuilding, and many more. Trade delegations from leading industries, public sector undertakings, national and international associations will be visiting the show.

The Flashback

The 2018 edition of IMTEX Forming & Tooltech attracted 36,000 business visitors over a span of six days. Orders worth Rs 539 crore and enquiries worth Rs 4,819 crore were generated.
