BMW Industries Limited (BMWIL), a trusted name in the steel
processing industry, has successfully commissioned the first phase of its
Greenfield Downstream Steel Complex at Bokaro, Jharkhand, with the Colour
Coating line commencing operations. The development marks a significant
milestone in the company’s transition into an integrated, value-added
downstream steel player.
The Greenfield Downstream Steel Complex at Bokaro, being
developed at a total project cost of Rs 8.03 billion, will house Cold Rolled
Full Hard (CRFH), GA/GI/ZAM and Colour Coated capacities, positioning BMWIL
across the full basket of value-added coated steel products.
As of 30 June 2026, Rs 3.416 billion had been deployed
towards the project, comprising Rs 1.392 billion of internal accruals and Rs
2.024 billion of debt drawdown. Of this, approximately Rs 600 million has been
capitalised towards commissioning the Colour Coating line, as of 5 October
2026.
Ram Gopal Bansal,
Chairman, BMW Industries Limited, said, “The commissioning of our Colour
Coating line at Bokaro marks an important first step in our Greenfield
expansion and in BMWIL’s evolution from a conversion-led business to an
integrated, value-added downstream steel player. The Bokaro complex will allow
us to control the entire chain, from Hot Rolled to Coated products, and to
offer customers the complete basket of coated steel: Galvanized, Galvalume, ZAM
and Colour Coated, while diversifying our product mix and customer base. Backed
by strong industry tailwinds for value-added and coated steel, supportive
government policy and disciplined capital deployment, we remain focused on
ramping up this facility and creating enduring long-term value for all our
stakeholders.”
The first phase covers the Colour Coating line at the Bokaro
Greenfield Downstream Steel Complex. The overall project entails an investment
of Rs 8.03 billion, with Rs 3.416 billion deployed as of 30 June 2026,
including Rs 1.392 billion through internal accruals and Rs 2.024 billion through
debt drawdown.
Funding of Rs 5 billion in debt has been tied up through a
consortium led by SBI, HDFC Bank and Yes Bank.
The project has qualified under the PLI 1.1 Scheme for the
Coated/Plated Steel category, with performance-linked incentives on sales up to
FY29, alongside benefits under Jharkhand’s Industrial & Investment
Promotion Policy.
BMWIL has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited
(IOCL) for PNG supply to the Bokaro facility.
The complex positions BMWIL to offer Galvanized, Galvalume,
ZAM and Colour Coated products. Subsequent phases will include 550,000 TPA Cold
Rolled Full Hard and 540,000 TPA GA/GI/ZAM capacities.
Revenue commencement is scheduled for Q3 FY27, followed by a
phased ramp-up over subsequent quarters.
Bokaro is located in Jharkhand, India’s second-highest
steel-producing state, offering proximity to raw material sources and key
logistics hubs. The expansion will transition BMWIL from a concentrated
customer base towards a diversified mix of customers and end-use industries,
enhancing revenue stability. A wider value-added product portfolio is expected
to support improved margin realisation across the cycle.
The initiative is aligned with India’s structural
demand-supply gap in specialised coated steel and is further supported by
safeguard duties, Quality Control Orders (QCOs) and ongoing import
substitution.
