The BBTT EOT crane ACD (anti collision device) system as the name implies is a system engineered and designed to detect and avoid collision of two or more over-head cranes running on the same bay – either on the same horizontal plane or one below the other – i.e., 3 cranes on the same bay. Typically for example in steel mills/heavy engineering workshops, there are two or more cranes running on the same bay. In such cases, the crane operators are mainly focused on handling/transferring material and often unaware of another crane approaching. The ACD systems operates mainly in Retro-reflex mode, as this mode of operation has a number of advantages over Thru’ Beam operation mode. Each installation of an ACD system is completed only when the sensing elements and high reflectivity double prismatic industrial reflectors are fitted on either cranes running on the bay. An infrared anti-collision system is based on the principle infrared light. When any one of the cranes comes into the detection zone, the receiver gets the modulated IR light and generates a Stop signal. In transmitter and receiver in through-beam mode, once in the detection range, the receiver gives a signal to stop the crane. The advantage of this system is that it is more immune to dust. However the disadvantage is in the case of power failure on any one crane, it disables the entire system. The other system is based on retro reflective principle. High power sensors are mounted in retro mode with a reflector. In the No-Detection zone, the receiver receives no light and hence is in the dark. If any of the cranes comes in the detection zone, the receiver is in light and hence generates a stop signal. The advantage of the system is that in the event of power failure on any one of the cranes, the ACD works on the other crane. The reflector used needs no power. This system is used for plants with power failure/break down on the cranes. However this property of working without power is also its disadvantage as it is prone to malfunction due to dust. But here too there are other solutions.
