Versatile Machining Capability Through Ram Type Milling & Grinding Heads

The Plano miller, with a self powered ram, is re-engineered from the carcass of an obsolete planer. For small and medium machine manufacturers, converted Plano millers with ram type milling head with a linear scale & DRO is a boon in terms of saved time and cost in pitch drilling and boring operations, which are normally done in a dedicated jig boring machine.

The ram type milling head has innumerable machining capabilities like heavy milling, drilling, boring, facing operations etc. In combination with a right angle attachment, having 360° tilting facility, it can machine all 4 sides of a rectangle work-piece. Unlike the cylindrical quill of a conventional milling head, the ram is a box type construction, and it is rigidly supported by 4 taper jibs in 4 corners of the ram to ensure the just minimum required clearance between the sliding surfaces. This unique construction ensures a very high level of straightness and rigidity, even when the ram slides to it’s maximum stroke end. The maximum contact area between the sliding surfaces of the ram ensures a very high level of rigidity even at the slide-end position, thus making the heavy material-removal, effortless.

Through the optionally offered D.R.O. the converted Plano miller facilitates accurate pitch selection, which has immense advantage in accurate pitch drilling operation and also with controlled depths.

Shenoy Engineering Pvt Ltd, also offers a very unique PLANO GRINDING ATTACHMENT, which can be used as cup wheel grinding attachment. To a great extent, the already achieved sliding accuracies of a sliding surface in milling operation, can be further refined to eliminate or minimize the laborious, hand scraping operation. This cup wheel grinding attachment can also be used as peripheral wheel grinding attachment, virtually adding surface grinding capability to the converted planing machine. Further, through a sector gear and bearing supported mechanism, the spindle axis of milling and / or grinding attachment can be set ±45°, facilitating taper machining or grinding.

The above described machining operations are of immense advantage to a machine building industry by providing very accurate machined surface and close pitch mounting holes to the LM guides and ball screws. The need of floor boring, jig boring, slide way grinding, scraping etc are either eliminated or minimized through these attachment. Small and Medium machine builder can reduce their dependency on their vendors, save on machine hours & transportation and meet their production target with one-time, affordable investment.
