An encoder is a device, which converts rotational motion or linear displacement of shafts  to electrical signals.

Types of Encoders

Incremental: Continuous change in the displacement or motion of shaft generates electrical signals.
Absolute: Output signal shows absolute position of angle or distance even at stationary position
